Kathmandu: The police have started an investigation into the citizenship dispute of Rabi Lamichhane, the chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party and the elected member of the House of Representatives from Chitwan 2.
According to the Kathmandu Police, the District Administration Office Kathmandu has sent a letter to the police. After that, the police started an investigation into this matter. The police has proceeded with the investigation process.
Earlier, there was a dispute about Lamichhane’s citizenship before the elections held on 20th November. Although he took American citizenship, he did not revoke his Nepali citizenship and was accused of using his old citizenship. Even when he took Nepali passport, his American passport is still in dispute.
A complaint was filed with the Election Commission saying that he used his old citizenship in the November 20 election. However, when he gave an explanation, the results of the vote had already started to come out. After that, a complaint was filed against him in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Section 21 9A. of the Passport Act 2076 states that a passport cannot be obtained by giving false details. If caught, according to Section 22, there is a legal provision that a fine ranging from two lakh to five lakh rupees or imprisonment from one year to three years or both.
